Care Connections

To Volunteer for the Care Connections Program

Care Connections Volunteers FlyerSalem County – Care Connections program is open to older adults and homebound individuals to receive weekly phone calls from a volunteer. Care Connections program connects volunteers and participants ages 18 and over through a weekly telephone conversation that creates connection, reduces social isolation, and cultivates relationships between participants. Participants and volunteers are screened for appropriateness before being matched by interests. The Salem County Office on Aging & Disabilities will designate a volunteer who will organize and administer weekly phone calls from their home to the Care Connections participant.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be a Salem County resident
  • Must be able to read and write in English
  • Must be able to commit to volunteering with the program for at least 4 weeks
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must be able to at least speak English (Spanish and any other languages are a plus!)
  • Appreciates and enjoys working with seniors or homebound individuals who are often lonely, and may have multiple communication challenges (examples: hard of hearing, limited English, etc.)
  • Is responsible and reliable to ensure that calls are made as scheduled in order to ensure the safety of the individuals
  • Able to maintain relationship and ethical boundaries as prescribed by program
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of the clients’ situation
  • Able to communicate positively with the individuals, consistently projecting an open, warm, and caring conversation
  • Must be friendly, patient, a good listener, with a good sense of humor
  • Must be able to demonstrate sensitivity, flexibility, and a non-judgmental attitude
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgement and discretion when working with others

Volunteer Duties:

  • Must be able to at least speak English (Spanish and any other languages are a plus!)
  • Appreciates and enjoys working with seniors or homebound individuals who lack socialization and may have multiple communication challenges (examples: hard of hearing, limited English, etc.)
  • Is responsible and reliable to ensure that calls start and end on schedule as per guidelines of the program
  • Able to maintain relationship and ethical boundaries with the call recipient
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of the client’s information
  • Able to communicate positively with the individuals, consistently projecting an open, warm, and caring conversation
  • Must be friendly, patient, a good listener, with a good sense of humor
  • Must be able to demonstrate sensitivity, flexibility, and a non-judgmental attitude
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgement and discretion when working with others
