Salem County is launching a free monthly lunch program for seniors and the disabled on the western side of the County starting February 7th. Called First Wednesday, the luncheon will be held each month at the Queen of Apostles Church in Pennsville.

First Wednesday, which is funded through a grant, is being offered through the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Aging and Disabilities, in partnership with Mid Atlantic States Career & Education Center.

Each luncheon will have a theme and offer a program. Courtesy transportation is available.

“First Wednesday is a way to provide a nutritious lunch and an opportunity for residents to socialize and engage in fellowship, if they so wish,” said Freeholder Director Melissa DeCastro. “This gives the seniors on this side of the County one opportunity each week to enjoy themselves and have a nutritious lunch as there is already a nutrition site offered in Pittsgrove Township.”

Saint Gabriel’s Church in Carney’s Point is also launching a monthly luncheon starting in February, and the Second Baptist Church in Pedricktown, and Sharptown Methodist Church in Sharptown have established programs on the other weeks.

To promote the four luncheons around the county, the Office on Aging and Disabilities will provide courtesy transportation to the Second Baptist Church, Sharptown Methodist, and the new program at St. Gabriel’s during February and March.

“The County has a successful nutrition program at the Pittsgrove Township senior center, where we offer a breakfast and lunch three days a week,” said Freeholder Ben Laury, Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee. “First Wednesday is our first effort on the western side of the county.”

Salem County residents 60 and older and persons with disabilities can call the County at 856-339-8622 to register and to find out additional information.
